RANZCR Radiation Oncology Trainee SMART Workshop

Date:     Monday 22 March 2021
Time:    10.30am – 4.30pm AEDT
Venue: Virtual
Registration Fee:
$75.00
Delegate Profile: Radiation Oncology Trainees

The RANZCR Radiation Oncology Trainee SMART Workshop is a workshop directly designed to enhance trainee knowledge and skills in:

  • Statistical methods
  • Critical appraisal of the medical literature
  • Research methodology

The workshop will take place virtually, and will have interactive small group sessions, guided by Radiation Oncologists and Biostatisticians, to discuss actively recruiting and published cancer clinical trials. Trainees will be provided with reading and lectures to view before the workshop begins.

The SMART Workshop is an opportunity for trainees to meet with local researchers within TROG, and international researchers. Trainees are strongly encouraged to stay on for the TROG ASM, which will be an excellent opportunity to put into practice skills learnt at SMART Workshop, and develop networks with TROG researchers.

There are two SMART workshops that run on alternate years: Study Design Concepts (workshop A) and Evidence Appraisal Skills (workshop B). Trainees are encouraged to attend both workshops. This year’s SMART Workshop theme is ‘Evidence Appraisal Skills’.

  • Trainees attending the SMART workshop for the first time are entitled to 10 SMART points.
  • Trainees attending their second SMART workshop may claim a further 5 SMART points.
  • Trainees attending the TROG ASM following the workshop are entitled to an additional 2 SMART Points (i.e. either 12 points or 7 points).

Updated SMART Requirements

The SMART Program will be replaced with mandatory attendance at one (1) SMART Workshop. This means that trainees will no longer be required to complete any SMART program activities (to accrue SMART points).

The above SMART requirements only apply to trainees who commenced training in December 2019 and 2020. All other trainees who are currently in Phase 1 (i.e. trainees who commenced training prior to December 2019) will still be required to complete the training requirements under the current training program (including the stipulated POE and SMART point activities).
